[ENDING AIDS]: MOH, MAC HOST ROUNDTABLE TO FURTHER DEVELOP HARM REDUCTION APPROACH TO HIV/AIDS AND DRUG USE IN MALAYSIA

    Kuala Lumpur, 21st February 2023: This interactive, multi-stakeholder round table discussion also included The Royal Malaysian Police (Polis Diraja Malaysia ( Royal Malaysia Police), The National Anti-Drugs Agency, Ministry of Home Affairs (Agensi Anti-dadah Kebangsaan Malaysia) , The Malaysian Prison Department, and partner organisations from the Malaysian AIDS Council: “Safeguarding the Future of Key Population”: enhancing our efforts to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Malaysia through strengthening national cooperation, including means of implementation, capacity-building and technical assistance, on the basis of common and shared responsibility.

    The roundtable discussion is organised by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KEMENTERIAN KESIHATAN MALAYSIA) in collaboration with the Malaysian AIDS Council (Malaysian AIDS Council). Head of Sector HIV / STI / HEP C, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Dr. Anita Sulaiman cited this roundtable will be set to be an annual initiative with various stakeholders. The Executive Director of MAC, Parimelazhagan Ellan also echoed the desire to have such discussions organised at the state and district levels, thus enabling local NGOs to reach out to rural communities in Malaysia via their programme initiatives.

    Representatives from PDRM also recommended the current harm reduction programme onsite police training schools be reactivated soon. The said programme within PDRM ceased its implementation in 2015.

    In line with the 95-95-95 targets in the year 2030, Malaysia is aiming to diagnose 95% of people living with HIV, ensure 95% of those who are diagnosed access antiretroviral treatment (ART) and 95% of those in treatment achieve viral suppression. The National Strategy to End AIDS 2016-2030 (NSPEA) guides efforts towards achieving these goals thus complementing the Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) 3 – Good Health and Well-being. #MACare #KitaJagaKita
