An Evening of Noble Deeds by the Malaysian AIDS Council & KOMITED Malaysia
Malaysian AIDS Council
Malaysian AIDS Council Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) was established in 1992 as an umbrella organisation to support and coordinate the efforts of non-governmental and other organisations working on HIV/AIDS issues in Malaysia.
MAC works in partnership with government agencies, the private sector and international organisations to ensure a committed and effective response to HIV/AIDS issues in Malaysia. Besides coordinating and streamlining the programmes of its Partner Organisations, the MAC Secretariat also provides these organisations with the necessary training, funds and other resources to implement effective HIV/AIDS programmes within various communities in Malaysia.
Komited Malaysia
KOMITED Malaysia, also known as Komuniti Intervensi Dadah Malaysia or DiC Malaysia (Drugs Intervention Community Malaysia), is a registered non-profit Community-Based Organization (CBO) founded and operated by former drug users. It is a Partner Organization of MAC.
Established in 1998 and officially registered as an NGO in 2001, the organization initially aimed to address the negative impact of drug use and HIV/AIDS in Kuantan. Over time, its programs expanded to cover the entire state of Pahang from 2007 onwards, responding to the growing need for comprehensive intervention. In 2011, DiC Pahang achieved a significant milestone by expanding its reach nationwide and officially registering as KOMITED Malaysia.
Kebawah Duli Paduka Mulia Tengku Mahkota Pahang, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah ibni Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah is the Royal Patron of KOMITED Malaysia
KDYTM Tuanku was deeply concerned and sympathetic to the plight of the underprivileged community members, especially recovering former drug users and People Living with HIV, who represents the core constituents of KOMITED Malaysia.
The unwavering support from KPDM Tuanku not only touches our hearts but also fuels our determination to work even more earnestly in our collective pursuit of aiding those who need it most.
Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic 30 years ago, HIV-related stigma and discrimination have caused People Living with HIV (PLHIV) to lose social value and standing due to their HIV positive status.
The impact of this stigma is particularly harsh on individuals who use drugs and are HIV positive.
Socially, they have to endure stereotypes, exclusion, and misconceptions associated with drug use and HIV. The intersection of these stigmas creates a negative impact on their mental health and well-being.
To a lesser extent but no less concerning, stigma and discrimination also affected many women and children living with or affected by HIV – some become orphaned after losing their parents to AIDS and left without family support.
With a better understanding of HIV and AIDS and the availability of a highly effective HIV treatment – an HIV diagnosis should not have caused so much agony and suffering.
PLHIV who receive and stay on antiretroviral (ARV) therapy can lead a healthy, productive life free from AIDS-related symptoms.
Yet, due to prevailing stigma and discrimination, some PLHIV were rejected by their family and trapped under tragic circumstances that landed them in one of our Shelter Homes, including those operated by KOMITED Malaysia. These shelters serve as the only refuge, providing a safe space for individuals to recover and rebuild their self-confidence.
The main objective of our Shelter Home Programme is to give every shelter resident a second shot at life – by providing them with the best possible HIV care and treatment services; and a fair chance to improve their human capital value and able to stand on their own feet.
